This Privacy Policy applies to the JoeZoo website available at https://GetJoeZoo.com (the “WebSite”), our web application found at https://JoeZooApp.com and our JoeZoo Express add-on for Google Docs (one of the G Suite for Education apps) (together the “Web Apps”).

INTRODUCTION

JoeZoo (“JoeZoo” or “We” or “Us”) knows how important it is for you to understand how and what personal information is collected, how it is used, if it is shared and in what circumstances. This privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) describes what personal information we collect, how it is used and under what circumstances we disclose it.

What is JoeZoo?

JoeZoo Inc. is a maker of educational software applications (apps).

JoeZoo Express is its add-on application to Google Docs that makes it simpler for educators to give high quality feedback or grades for any written assignment. JoeZoo App is its application that makes it easier for educators to build and manage grading rubrics and feedback comment sets that they can instantly, and securely use in the JoeZoo Express add-on or, if they choose, share across their school or district.

How do the Web Apps work?

JoeZoo Express is a G Suite for Education approved app and can be installed by educators or schools, on behalf of students, from the Google Apps Marketplace [https://gsuite.google.com/marketplace/app/joezoo_express/697313020323]

On first use of the JoeZoo Express add-on within Google Docs, Google asks each user (i.e. each child or educator) to grant JoeZoo access to select personal information previously given to Google and apps to complete the installation process. This information is described below under “What personal information is collected”.

After installation, all users go through a series of set up screens within the JoeZoo Express add-on one of which asks each student to identify the school that they attend, but does not ask for any other personal information from the student.

From that point forward, JoeZoo will use the user’s unique email address associated with their Google Account to encrypt all feedback, grades and assessments of student work stored by JoeZoo on its servers at Amazon in the US and securely sign in to JoeZoo Express.

The information stored in the JoeZoo App can only be accessed by the educator. This information helps the educator track the progress of the class, as well as that of each child for the specific learning skills that the educator is focussing on in their course.

HOW WE COLLECT PERSONAL INFORMATION AND WHY

We collect information about educators and students in a variety of ways, such as information that they provide to us, information collected automatically through technology, information collected through the use of cookies and unique identifiers (such as their computer’s IP address as explained below), and information collected through the use of third party analytics technologies for the limited purpose of enabling educators and students to use our Web Apps and to maximize the learning benefits for each user. We limit the amount of personal information we collect to that required to personalise the learning experience of students and educators.

We may collect the following information:

(i) Information that educators and students give us

We collect personal information about educators and students that they choose to provide to and share with us, directly and through Google Apps with their consent. From educators, we ask for the full name, salutation, school name, school country and province. From students, we ask for the school name, school country and province only.

(ii) Information automatically collected from you

During registration, educators and students will be asked to submit their contact information. We will also automatically collect information about their computer when they use our Web Apps and our WebSite. We may also log their computer or device operating system type, IP address, display resolution, browser type, browser language, pages they viewed on our WebSite or in our Web Apps, how long they spent on a page or feature and access times.

From educators, we automatically collect an e-mail address and a Google User ID (obtained directly from his/her Google Account), which we use to securely authenticate the user, to confirm the user is authorized to use Google Apps and to encrypt the feedback, assessments and grades added using our Web Apps. We obtain access to Google Drive through Google to permit educators to export their feedback and grading data as a Google Sheets files. If the educators use Google Classroom, and choose to connect it to JoeZoo, our add-on will call the Google Classroom app, on-demand, to list his/her class, student and assignment records to make it easier and faster for them to give high quality feedback to students.

From students, we automatically collect the e-mail address associated with their Google Account and a Google User ID (obtained directly from their Google Account), which we only use to securely authenticate the user, to confirm the user is authorized to use Google Apps and to encrypt the user’s work within our apps.

(iii) Cookies

We may automatically collect information using “cookies”. Cookies are small data files stored on your hard drive by a website. Among other things, cookies help us to make your experience with our Web Apps and WebSite better.

We use the following cookies:

  • Session State Cookies – These cookies store information regarding a user’s browsing session and authenticated state.
  • Google Sign-In Cookies – As JoeZooApp.com uses Google Sign-in to authenticate/sign-in a user, Google uses a set of cookies to detect and store a user’s authenticated state information for JoeZooApp.com.
  • Functional cookies – This type of cookies stores information such as, but not limited to, last indicated user preferences and settings. An example could be storing the user’s language preference or last visited page in the browser.
  • Google Analytics Cookies – We use Google Analytics to help us understand how users engage with JoeZoo. Google Analytics cookies help us to collect and report on anonymized usage information without identifying the user to Google. No personal information is gathered or stored so this data is strictly anonymous.

You can use the browser add-on provided by Google at http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout to opt-out of Google Analytics based tracking across all websites, but in some cases doing so may impact your ability to use our Web Apps and WebSites.

(iv) Unique identifiers

These cookies track behaviour when users engage our Web Apps, such as length of time spent on a particular page and pages viewed during a particular sign-in period. While the unique identifiers such as an IP address and generated identifiers do not identify you directly or contain any personal information, they do collect information about your use of our Web Apps or WebSite, on a de-identified basis.

We use the information that we gather to improve our Web Apps and WebSite and to improve the learning experience for students and educators.

GOOGLE ACCOUNT CONNECTIONS

If you choose to use your Google Account to install and log into our Web Apps, and to connect your Google Apps in the use of our Web Apps, we will receive information from Google to make it easier for you to use our Web Apps and display relevant content. Information that we collect from these accounts and applications may depend on the privacy settings you have with Google, so please consult its privacy policies.

OTHER USES OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

Above, we have described the personal information that we collect and how we collect it. Here are some specific examples of how we use that information:

  • to record student performance data and convert part of that data into measurements for each student and educator (to be displayed as analytic charts to educators only);
  • to understand your preferences and to enhance your experience and enjoyment using our Web Apps and WebSite;
  • to respond to your comments and questions and provide user support services;
  • to send you related information including confirmations, technical notices, updates, security alerts, and support and administrative messages;
  • to provide and deliver products and services that you request.
  • We will not use your personal information in any way other than as described in this Privacy Policy.

SHARING OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

Only an educator will be allowed to access a student’s work or assignments and related statistics concerning areas for future improvement.

We will not share personal information with third parties, including affiliates, for any purposes, including advertising and marketing. We do not share personal information, other than as follows:

  • with third party service providers, consultants, and other service providers who work for us and need access to user information to do that work (for example, our web hosting provider and third party analytics service providers); See subsection (i) below for further details.
  • to comply with laws or to respond to lawful requests and legal process; See subsection (ii) below for further details.
  • to protect the rights and property of JoeZoo, our agents, users, and others including to enforce our agreements, policies, and terms of use;
  • in an emergency to protect the personal safety of JoeZoo users or any person;

We may disclose your information as follows:

(i) Service Providers & Suppliers

Your information may be stored and processed by our service providers or suppliers in the United States or other locations where the service providers or suppliers maintain facilities, and therefore it might not benefit from the same confidentiality and security as under Canadian law. We therefore require our service providers and suppliers to keep your information secure and confidential through contractual measures. In addition, our service providers and suppliers may not use or disclose personal information for any purpose other than providing us with the services we need to offer our Web Apps and WebSite.

(ii) Legal Requirements and Protection of JoeZoo and Others

We may need to disclose your information or information about your activities as a user of the JoeZoo Web Apps and WebSite when required by subpoena or other legal process, or if we have a good faith belief that disclosure is necessary to:

  • Investigate, prevent or take action regarding suspected or actual illegal activities or to assist government enforcement agencies;
  • Investigate, prevent or take action with regard to harmful behaviour such as harassment or bullying;
  • Enforce this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service [https://GetJoeZoo.com/terms.html], investigate and defend ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations, or protect the security or integrity of our Web Apps and WebSite; or
  • Exercise or protect the rights, property or personal safety of JoeZoo, our users, employees, agents or others.

(iii) Business Transfers

(We may also disclose your information regardless of the manner with which we collected it to a third party as part of reorganization or a sale of the assets of JoeZoo, or its subsidiaries or divisions, in which case we will take the necessary steps to require that the third party safeguard and keep confidential your personal information in compliance with applicable federal and provincial privacy legislation in Canada governing such disclosures.

Any third party, to which we transfer or sell our assets, will have the right to continue to use the personal and other information that you provide to us, provided that it complies with applicable federal and provincial privacy legislation in Canada governing such disclosures.

(iv) Aggregate Information

We may create and use anonymized and aggregated data for the following purposes:

  • to report the number of users who have installed and use our Web Apps and frequency of use;
  • to report how many schools or school boards actively use our Web Apps;
  • to generate other business statistics of interest to a potential investor or purchaser;

We may, without restriction, disclose aggregated and anonymized information about our users and information that does not identify any individual or disclose personal information.

SECURITY OF PERSONAL INFORMATION

We encrypt the transmission of your information using Secure Sockets Layer technology (“SSL”). Additionally, for the JoeZoo Express add-on, we use secure generated passwords using an iterated one-way hashing technique. For the JoeZoo App, encrypted ID Tokens generated by the Google Sign-in process are used to verify the user’s identity and to log the user into the Web Apps. Despite our efforts, however, third parties may still find ways to hack into the service and intercept data transmissions. Therefore, although we take security and confidentiality very seriously and work very hard to protect each user’s privacy, we cannot guarantee the security and confidentiality of your information.

RIGHT OF ACCESS, RECTIFICATION AND DESTRUCTION

Educators may email us at [email protected] or write us at the address listed below to a request a copy of their and their students’ personal JoeZoo data. Educators have the right to request the rectification of inaccurate information and the right to request deletion of such information which will immediately terminate future use of our Web Apps.

CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY

We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make any changes to this Privacy Policy, we will change the Last Revised date above. If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will notify educators by sending an e mail to them requesting that they in turn notify students and their parents or guardian. We will also post a notice on our website users. Except as otherwise provided in this Privacy Policy, any changes to this Privacy Policy will be effective immediately for new users of the JoeZoo Web Apps or WebSite. Fifteen (15) calendar days after such notice has been sent, we will implement the planned changes. You are responsible at all times for providing to us your most current e-mail address.
